CASA of Greater Prince William, Virginia
Little voices cry out, who will help?
Every day children are being abused, neglected or abandoned by the people who are supposed to love, care for and protect them. Some of these children will find themselves in a courtroom, helpless victims whose futures are being decided by people they don't know and who don't know them. The system has stepped in to protect them and plan for their future. Often the system is overtaxed with many children and limited resources. An extra set of eyes and ears can help insure that the child remains safe, receives all they need to help them overcome their trauma, has the hope of a better future in a safe, nurturing and permanent home as quickly as possible. That extra monitoring and advocacy comes from CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA involves the caring people of our community in helping to protect some of our most vulnerable citizens, our children.
CASA is a non-profit organization serving abused, neglected and abandoned children through specially trained community volunteers. The CASA program was begun in 1977 by a judge in Seattle Washington who felt that members of the community could help to keep abused children safe and help insure that they not fall through the cracks of the system and receive all the assistance they need to have a safe, nurturing and permanent home.
Today there are more than 900 programs serving every state in the union including the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are just under 30 programs in the state of Virginia. CASA of Greater Prince William serves more than 300 maltreated children annually, from birth to age 18. GPW CASA serves the children of the 31st Judicial District which includes Manassas City, Manassas Park, and Prince William County. |
